Regenerative medicine in Cincinnati.
Biology with context.
Understand the differences between PRP, bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), and other treatments described as regenerative medicine, including their limitations.
Use precise language - and realistic expectations.
Regenerative medicine is a broad term. In nonsurgical orthopedics, the treatments I most commonly discuss are autologous orthobiologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC).
Patients frequently use the phrase “stem cell therapy” when searching for these options. BMAC is a concentrated bone-marrow product containing platelets, cytokines, hematopoietic cells, and a small population of mesenchymal stromal/progenitor cells. It is more accurate to call the procedure BMAC than to imply that it is a purified or expanded stem-cell product.
Start with the diagnosis and the evidence.
The goal is to decide whether an orthobiologic is appropriate at all - and if so, which biologic, target, dose, and rehabilitation strategy make sense.
What patients usually mean by regenerative medicine.
PRP
Platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a sample of your own blood. Its role depends on the condition being treated and the available evidence.
BMAC
Bone marrow aspirate concentrate is prepared from a sample of your own bone marrow. It contains a mixture of cells and other components; it is not a purified stem-cell product.
Host environment
Loading, rehabilitation, metabolic health, sleep, nutrition, and tissue capacity still matter after the procedure.
A biologic procedure is one part of the plan.
What patients usually want to know.
Is BMAC the same thing as a purified stem-cell treatment?
No. BMAC is a concentrated bone-marrow aspirate containing a mixture of cells and signaling molecules. It is not a culture-expanded or purified stem-cell product.
Does regenerative medicine regrow cartilage or guarantee tissue healing?
No procedure can guarantee tissue regeneration. Expected benefits and limitations depend on the condition, tissue, severity, biologic product, and patient factors.
How do you decide between PRP and BMAC?
The choice depends on the diagnosis, tissue, available evidence, prior treatment, goals, and the broader clinical context rather than on a single “stronger is better” hierarchy.
